The diocese of Sokodé

The diocese of Sokodé is located in the north of Togo. It extends from 8.5° to 10° north latitude. With an area of 12,610 Km2, the diocese of Sokodé is bordered to the south by the diocese of Atakpamé and to the north by the diocese of Kara. To the east, it opens onto Benin through the town of Kaboli and to the west into Ghana through the large forests of the Fazao Mountains which extend to Tindjassi.

Administratively, the diocese of Sokodé covers both a large part of the Central Region and the southern part of the Kara Region. It extends over four prefectures: Tchaoudjo (Sokodé), Assoli (Bafilo), Sotouboua, Tchamba and the Plaine de Mô (Djarkpanga).

The population is made up of baptized Catholic Christians (13% of the population). The other Christians are estimated at 1.5% of the population. The number of Muslims and practitioners of the African Traditional Religion is around 84%. Muslims occupy an important place in the diocese (32%). They are in the majority in the parishes of Bafilo, Alédjo, Tchamba, and Sokodé. The diocese of Sokodé is dotted with mosques.

On the ecclesial level, the diocese is divided into four deaneries: Alédjo, Sokodé, Kaboli and Sotouboua. The diocese now has 21 parishes with 85 priests, 64 of whom are local clergy and 21 missionary priests. Its current Bishop is Bishop Célestin-Marie Bawilima GAOUA since January 3, 2016.
